Johnson notes for you that Mark’s Greek is “unimpressive,” even pointing out that Matthew and Luke frequently correct and improve it (162). But he quickly adds that Mark is “far from being a careless editor” (162), and he then proceeds to demonstrate for you some of Mark’s literary techniques. Johnson introduces you to the tool of literary intercalation. He claims that Mark uses structure to set up stories against/inside each other as a way of offering a matrix of interpretation. He writes, “Mark makes no comment on any of this. He leaves the reader to figure out the juxtapositions” (163). This week, I would like for you to write about this technique as you answer the following question, teasing out the juxtapositions for yourself:
How does Mark use literary intercalation to teach his readers?
